Taken from my myspace blog - one of my favorites! Originally posted 2/17/08. I have since canceled my match.com account. After a month, I couldn't take it anymore. I prefer the traditional way of dating - drunk in a bar. Seriously though, you have to be face to face to truly know if there is chemistry... and I'm not settling for anything less than butterflies.
So a couple weeks ago, after too many Saturday nights at home, I gave in a signed up for match.com. It's lead to some very interesting evenings! Here are some of my on-line dating tips.
1. Never date a guy who makes fun of one of your good friends for going on two dates in one day. Either he's an @sshole or socially awkward. In my case it was the latter. Not worth the energy defending your friend to a stranger, just leave.
2. Be wary about dating a guy who quotes Anchor Man. Although this is a hilarious movie - Ron Burgundy is a pompous @ss - it is likely your date will be also.
3. Just because you chat via text messaging to someone, does not mean you know them. Just because they send cute messages, does not mean they are cute in person. There is a reason they don't talk on the phone - in my case, he was a spitter. Texting will only let you down and give you sore thumbs.
4. Never wear granny panties on a date. The man may greatly exceed your expectations - when he goes in for that kiss - you freeze because you realize the granny panties are on and can be felt through your shirt. This may make for an awkward end to the evening. Learn from Bridget Jones, don't do it no matter how much they suck you in.
5. Do not get frustrated with online dating. It's just like a bar or anywhere else you meet men. The good ones are one in a million. "The One" isn't going to jump out waiving his hands yelling "it's me! It's me!" It takes time. Your chances of meeting a jerk or weirdo are way higher than meeting a good one. So stay positive and stay honest with yourself.
There you have it. My 5 learnings so far. I'm sure there will be more where that came from.....
